CVT Transmissions have had a bad reputation in the past. The horror stories develop when CVT transmissions start playing up and sometimes even lose drive completely. The cause of these problems often arose in vehicles that were imported from Japan and sold in New Zealand. Workshops in New Zealand started servicing these cars without realising they were fitted with CVT�s. They changed the oil and after a period the transmission failed. A broken belt was most often the problem. The dealers could not supply parts at that stage to repair this, so a lot of second hand units were fitted. The workshops used Dexron II and Dexron III to service the transmission and the problem recurred
